At the turn of the millennium, for a year of days beginning in the autumn of 1999, Kathleen and Henry lived in a remote village, in the Maramures region of northern Transylvania, Romania. This region is unique amongst the former Soviet Bloc for the way it has preserved its way of life. After World War II, for forty years of communist rule, a few valleys in Maramures escaped collectivized farming because of poor soil and hilly landscape. In the post cold-war period, preservation continued because of pervasive impoverishment which slows the advancement of modernity into the reaches of northern Transylvania.
But nothing will stand still forever. While the older generation still don winter footwear that pre-date the Romans, the younger generation flock to market to buy shoes bearing that ubiquitous swoosh of western manufacture.
An internationally exhibited photographer, Kathleen Laraia McLaughlin was awarded a number of grants for her work in Romania, including a Fulbright Senior Scholarship, an IREX IARO Grant (National Endowment for the Humanities) and a Houston Center for Photography Fellowship. Her images have appeared in LensWork, Rangefinder, B&W Magazine, Black + White Photography (UK) and The Times Saturday Magazine (UK). Her photographs have been show in the US and abroad and are in the permanent collections at the Museum of Photographic Art (San Diego) and the Art Museum of Western Virginia. Kathleen received her MFA in Photography from Virginia Commonwealth University. She has been a freelance photographer and photo educator for 10 years.
In addition to his work as a writer, H. Woods McLaughlin’s background includes stints as an organic farmer, computer programmer and hang gliding pilot – as well as Kathleen’s photography assistant. He also boasts an undergraduate degree in Mathematics from Swarthmore College and a Masters of Screenwriting from the University of Southern California. H. Woods is now owner and operator of Vector Studios, which is dedicated to producing computer animated films using Machinima technology.
Kathleen and H. Woods are raising two young boys in South Pasadena, California.

La rândul său, de mileniu, pentru un an de zile, începând din toamna anului 1999, Kathleen si Henry a trăit într-un sat de la distanţă, în regiunea Maramureş din nordul Transilvaniei, România. Această regiune este unic printre fostul bloc sovietic pentru modul în care a păstrat modul de viaţă. Dupa al doilea razboi mondial, timp de patruzeci de ani de conducere comunista, cateva vai din Maramures a scăpat colectivizat agricultura, din cauza solului sărac şi a peisajului deluros. În perioada post-război rece perioadă, conservarea a continuat din cauza sărăcirii omniprezentă, care încetineşte dezvoltarea de modernitate în eşaloanele din nordul Transilvaniei.
Dar nimic nu va sta în continuare pentru totdeauna. În timp ce generaţia mai în vârstă încă încălţăminte de iarnă, care nu pre-data de romani, tânăra generaţie efectiv la piaţă să cumpere pantofi care poartă că swoosh omniprezent de fabricaţie de vest.
Un fotograf pe plan internaţional a expus, Kathleen Laraia McLaughlin a fost atribuit un număr de burse pentru munca ei în România, inclusiv o bursa Fulbright Senior, un IREX IARO Grant (National Endowment for umaniste), şi un Centru Houston pentru Fotografie Fellowship. Imaginile sale au apărut în LensWork, Telemetru, B & W Magazine, negru + fotografie alb (Marea Britanie) şi sâmbătă Times Magazine (Marea Britanie). Fotografiile ei au fost spectacol în Statele Unite şi în străinătate şi sunt în colecţiile permanente de la Muzeul de Artă Fotografică (San Diego), şi Muzeul de Artă din Virginia de Vest. Kathleen a primit o AMF în Fotografie de la Virginia Commonwealth University. Ea a fost un fotograf independent şi educator fotografie de 10 de ani.
În plus faţă de munca sa ca scriitor, fundal H. Woods McLaughlin include stints ca un fermier organic, programator şi alunecare atarna pilot -, precum şi ca asistent al lui Kathleen fotografie.
