Photographer Captures Vanishing Romanian Peasant Life

Photos and Stories from “The Color of Hay; The Peasants of Maramureş”

The Maramureş Valley in Northern Romania is so remote that generations of peasant farming practices remained intact. As modern amenities like cable TV began to reach the region, Kathleen Laraia McLaughlin documented how the people changed. On December 15, McLaughlin will share her experience and photographs from her book, “The Color of Hay; The Peasants of Maramureş” at the Cleveland Park Neighborhood Library.

Image sold at MOPA's Photo Auction 2011 which was held on October 5th.

Kathleen gave a talk at Park West Camera Club at Soho Photo Gallery on October 17. It was a terrific group and a fabulous and inspiring trip to New York!

In August, oat fields paint the landscape with golden rectangles. A family must cut their crop before it is fully ripe or the seeds will be lost to the earth. To prepare the stalks for being threshed, they first tie them in bundles.

Inner-Mongolia - Jumping in the Desert

I was invited to exhibit 20 black and white photographs of my Color of Hay work. The event was for the annual Photo Awards sponsored by China Photo Magazine. We met in northern China in inner-Mongolia at a resort called Xiang Sha Wan. My daily commute to the exhibition space was a cable car, desert jeep, and walk in the sand with polyester leg coverings. Here I am (far right) with Laura Moya and Nancy Newberry.
